Increased cell proliferation refers to the physiological or pathological process where cells undergo rapid division, leading to an increase in total cell mass. In a healthy context, this process is tightly regulated and essential for growth, development, and tissue regeneration (National Cancer Institute, 2023). However, 'sustained proliferative signaling' is recognized as a primary hallmark of cancer, where genetic mutations allow cells to bypass normal growth-inhibitory signals (Hanahan & Weinberg, 2011, Cell). Because this term describes a biological outcome or a disease state rather than a specific protein, enzyme, or receptor, it is not classified as a discrete therapeutic target in molecular pharmacology. Instead, therapeutic interventions target the underlying molecular drivers, such as cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) or growth factor receptors like EGFR, to arrest the cell cycle (StatPearls, 2023). Common biomarkers used to quantify this process in clinical settings include the Ki-67 labeling index and Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen (PCNA) expression (PubMed, PMID: 25031721). Consequently, while it is a focus of clinical monitoring, it remains a phenotypic description of cellular behavior rather than a targetable molecule.
