Overview

The incus, commonly known as the anvil, is one of the three small bones (ossicles) located in the middle ear of mammals. It serves a critical role in the auditory system by transmitting sound vibrations from the malleus to the stapes, which then passes the signal to the inner ear. While the incus is essential for normal hearing, it is an anatomical structure rather than a molecular therapeutic target such as a receptor or enzyme. Pathologies involving the incus, such as ossicular chain discontinuity or otosclerosis, are typically addressed through surgical intervention or prosthetic replacement rather than pharmacological targeting of the bone itself.
