Indole

Molecular classification
Microbial metabolite, Uremic toxin precursor, Organic heterocyclic compound
01

Overview

Indole is a microbial metabolite produced in the human gut, primarily through the bacterial metabolism of the essential amino acid L-tryptophan. It serves as a key precursor to several uremic toxins, most notably indoxyl sulfate and indole-3-acetic acid, which accumulate in patients with impaired kidney function and contribute to systemic toxicity. In chronic kidney disease (CKD), reduced excretion leads to the accumulation of protein-bound uremic toxins (PBUTs) such as indoxyl sulfate, resulting in vascular damage, heightened morbidity and mortality, proinflammatory signaling, and oxidative stress.
