Induced myeloid cell leukemia 1 protein (Mcl-1) is a member of the BCL-2 family of proteins that regulates apoptosis. It acts as an anti-apoptotic factor by sequestering pro-apoptotic proteins like Bak and Bax, preventing mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization. Mcl-1 expression is tightly regulated at multiple levels, and its overexpression is common in cancers, contributing to tumor survival and drug resistance.
