Induction of cellular immunity refers to the activation of immune responses mediated primarily by T lymphocytes (especially cytotoxic CD8+ T cells), macrophages, and cytokines, as opposed to antibody-mediated (humoral) immunity. This process is critical for defense against intracellular pathogens (such as viruses and certain bacteria), tumor cells, and allografts. Cellular immunity involves antigen presentation via MHC molecules, subsequent T cell activation and clonal expansion, recognition of infected or abnormal cells, and their direct destruction or modulation by immune effectors. "Induction of cellular immunity" is not a molecule or receptor, but rather a key function of the adaptive immune system.
