Overview

The infant adaptive immune system is a complex physiological system rather than a single molecular target, characterized by its developmental transition from a protected intrauterine environment to an antigen-rich external world (Simon et al., 2015, Proc Biol Sci). It involves the maturation and activation of T and B lymphocytes, which are initially naive and exhibit a distinct bias toward Th2-type cytokine production to prevent inflammatory damage during colonization (Zhang et al., 2017, Nature). This system is responsible for developing long-term immunological memory, though its efficacy is often limited by the presence of maternal antibodies and the immaturity of secondary lymphoid tissues (Justiz Vaillant & Ramphul, 2023, StatPearls). In clinical practice, this system is modulated through active immunization (vaccines) and passive immunization (e.g., Palivizumab for RSV) to protect against neonatal infections (NIH, 2021). Understanding the unique kinetics of infant immunity is essential for addressing pediatric disease roles such as sepsis, respiratory infections, and the early origins of allergic diseases.
