Target intelligence / Profile preview
The infant gut microbiota is a complex and dynamic ecosystem of microorganisms, primarily bacteria, that colonizes the neonatal gastrointestinal tract shortly after birth (Milani et al., 2017). This community is essential for the structural and functional development of the mucosal immune system and the establishment of metabolic homeostasis (Arrieta et al., 2014). Key early colonizers, such as Bifidobacterium species, are specialized to metabolize human milk oligosaccharides, producing metabolites like short-chain fatty acids that support gut barrier integrity (Robertson et al., 2019). Disruptions to this assembly process, known as dysbiosis, are associated with an increased risk of neonatal conditions like necrotizing enterocolitis and long-term immune-mediated diseases such as asthma and allergies (Tamburini et al., 2016). Therapeutic interventions targeting the infant gut microbiota include the administration of specific probiotic strains and prebiotic fibers to promote a healthy microbial composition (Hill et al., 2014). Understanding the interactions within this ecosystem is vital for developing precision medicine approaches to prevent and treat pediatric and adult-onset chronic diseases.
Modulation of the host immune system through Toll-like receptor signaling, production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that maintain gut barrier integrity, and competitive inhibition of pathogenic bacteria (Hill et al., 2014; Robertson et al., 2019).
