Overview

Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is a highly contagious avian Gammacoronavirus that primarily infects chickens, causing acute respiratory disease, reduced egg production and quality, nephritis, and sometimes mortality. It is characterized by high genetic variability due to high mutation rates and frequent recombination events, especially within the S1 gene. Control measures mainly rely on vaccines, but their effectiveness is limited by the virus's antigenic diversity. The S glycoprotein is a key determinant of serotype and is the target of neutralizing antibodies.
