The Infectious Bursal Disease Virus (IBDV) immune complex (IBD-IC) is a specialized vaccine formulation consisting of live attenuated IBDV particles bound to specific polyclonal IgY antibodies (Ivan et al., 2005, PMID: 16023407). This complex is designed to circumvent the inhibitory effects of maternal antibodies (MDA) in young chicks, which typically neutralize standard live vaccines. The mechanism involves the sequestration of the complex by follicular dendritic cells (FDCs) and macrophages in the spleen and other lymphoid organs (Jeurissen et al., 1998, PMID: 9682534). As the chick's MDA levels decay below a critical threshold, the virus is gradually released from the FDCs and transported to the bursa of Fabricius. Once in the bursa, the virus replicates in B lymphocytes, triggering a robust active immune response that provides long-term protection against Gumboro disease (Müller et al., 2003, PMID: 12718802). This technology allows for 'in ovo' or day-old administration, ensuring that every bird is immunized regardless of its initial maternal immunity level.
The immune complex protects the live attenuated vaccine virus from neutralization by circulating maternal antibodies (MDA). Following administration, the complex is captured and sequestered by follicular dendritic cells (FDCs) and macrophages in lymphoid tissues. As maternal antibody titers naturally decline, the virus is released from the FDCs and migrates to the bursa of Fabricius, where it infects B cells to induce a targeted, active immune response.
