Additionally, drugs like corticosteroids can broadly suppress the transcription of many pro-inflammatory genes to reduce systemic inflammation (Mayo Clinic, 2023). Because this term encompasses a wide range of molecular entities rather than a single receptor or enzyme, it is classified as a functional gene set or pathway rather than a discrete therapeutic target. Consequently, therapeutic modulation often requires a balance between reducing pathological inflammation and maintaining adequate immune surveillance against infections (NIH, 2022).
Drugs typically act by neutralizing the protein products of these genes (e.g., cytokine-specific antibodies), inhibiting the enzymatic activity of the gene products (e.g., COX inhibitors), or modulating the transcription factors that regulate gene expression (e.g., glucocorticoids binding to the glucocorticoid receptor).
