Overview

Inflammation mediators, also known as inflammatory mediators, are endogenous chemical agents that play a central role in initiating, regulating, and resolving the inflammatory response. They are produced by various cells—primarily immune cells such as macrophages, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and mast cells—in response to infection, injury, or other harmful stimuli. These substances orchestrate the complex cascade of events that characterize inflammation: vasodilation (increased blood flow), increased vascular permeability (allowing immune cell migration), pain induction, and recruitment of additional immune components to sites of tissue damage or infection. Dysregulation or excessive production can contribute to chronic diseases.

Mechanism of action

Inflammatory mediators act through several mechanisms: - Inducing vasodilation for increased blood flow - Increasing vascular permeability so immune cells can access affected tissues - Attracting white blood cells via chemotaxis - Activating endothelial and other local tissue responses
