Inflammatory cytokine production by immune cells refers to the synthesis and secretion of specific signaling proteins—cytokines—that promote inflammation. These molecules are primarily produced by immune cells such as macrophages, monocytes, dendritic cells, helper T cells (Th1 and Th17), neutrophils, mast cells, basophils, natural killer (NK) cells, and innate lymphoid cells. The process is a central component of the body’s defense mechanism against pathogens or injury but can also contribute to chronic inflammatory diseases if dysregulated.
