Overview

Inflammatory exudation is a complex physiological process characterized by the leakage of plasma fluid, proteins, and blood cells from the vascular system into the surrounding interstitial tissues or body cavities during an inflammatory response (StatPearls, NBK541094). This process is driven by increased vascular permeability, typically mediated by chemical signals such as histamine, bradykinin, and leukotrienes, as well as structural changes in the endothelial lining of blood vessels (Robbins Basic Pathology, 10th Ed). While essential for transporting immune components like antibodies and leukocytes to the site of injury to neutralize pathogens, excessive exudation can lead to significant tissue swelling (edema), pain, and loss of function. In a clinical context, inflammatory exudation is a symptom or pathological sign rather than a specific molecular target like a receptor or enzyme. Therapeutic strategies focus on modulating the underlying signaling pathways, such as using corticosteroids to stabilize membranes or anti-VEGF agents to reduce vascular leakage in conditions like macular edema (PubMed, PMID 12411516). Consequently, managing exudation is a primary goal in treating various acute and chronic inflammatory diseases.
