01

Overview

Inflammatory mediators in epidermal tissue are a diverse group of molecules produced by skin cells—primarily keratinocytes—and resident or recruited immune cells. These mediators play crucial roles in initiating, propagating, and resolving inflammation within the skin. They include cytokines, chemokines, eicosanoids (such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes), vasoactive amines, peptides, acute-phase proteins, and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). Dysregulation can lead to chronic inflammatory diseases such as psoriasis or eczema due to imbalanced production between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory factors.
