Overview

Inflammatory proteins and fibrin refers to a collective group of proteinaceous substances that accumulate at sites of tissue injury, infection, or chronic inflammation [1, 8]. This group includes fibrin—a fibrous, non-globular protein involved in blood clotting—and various inflammatory mediators such as cytokines, chemokines, and acute-phase reactants [4, 9]. In pathological states, the excessive accumulation of these proteins leads to edema, impaired microcirculation, and delayed tissue healing [2, 6]. Therapeutic intervention typically involves the use of systemic proteolytic enzymes, such as serratiopeptidase, trypsin, or bromelain, which catalyze the hydrolysis of these proteins [3, 7]. By breaking down fibrin and inflammatory debris, these agents help reduce swelling, improve the penetration of other drugs like antibiotics, and facilitate the body's natural repair processes [2, 5]. This target is primarily addressed in the management of post-operative swelling, sports injuries, and respiratory conditions characterized by thick mucus [7, 9].
