The hemagglutinin (HA) protein is a major surface glycoprotein of the Influenza A virus, specifically in the H3N2 subtype. It plays a critical role in viral entry by binding to sialic acid-containing receptors on host cells, facilitating viral attachment and subsequent fusion with the host cell membrane. HA is also a primary target for neutralizing antibodies and thus central to immune recognition and vaccine design. The mature functional form of hemagglutinin exists as a homotrimer, with each monomer composed of HA1 (receptor binding) and HA2 (membrane fusion).
