The neuraminidase (NA) protein is one of the two major surface glycoproteins of the influenza A virus, including the H3N2 subtype. It plays a critical role in the viral life cycle by enabling progeny virions to be released from infected host cells and facilitating viral spread within the respiratory tract. NA acts as an exosialidase, cleaving sialic acid residues on host cell glycoproteins and glycolipids, which allows newly formed virions to detach from host cells and promotes infection spread. It is a target for antiviral drugs like oseltamivir.
