Overview

Influenza A hemagglutinin (HA) is a surface glycoprotein essential for viral entry into host cells. The H1N1 subtype is a specific combination of hemagglutinin (H1) and neuraminidase (N1) proteins on the viral envelope, responsible for significant human pandemics. HA mediates receptor binding to sialic acid on host cells and membrane fusion, facilitating viral RNA release into the cytoplasm. It is a major target for neutralizing antibodies, but antigenic drift necessitates frequent vaccine updates.
