The hemagglutinin (HA) antigen of the Influenza A virus, specifically the H3N2 subtype, is a trimeric glycoprotein found on the viral envelope. It is essential for viral infectivity, mediating binding to host cell receptors (sialic acids) and membrane fusion. HA is a major target for neutralizing antibodies, and its antigenic sites undergo frequent mutations (antigenic drift), necessitating regular updates to influenza vaccines. The H3N2 subtype is a significant cause of seasonal influenza epidemics.
Neutralizing antibodies bind to HA, preventing receptor binding and/or membrane fusion. Neuraminidase inhibitors prevent the release of newly formed virus, indirectly impacting the spread of infection.
