Overview

Influenza A N9 neuraminidase (NA) is one of the nine neuraminidase subtypes found in influenza A viruses. Neuraminidases are surface glycoproteins that play a crucial role in the viral life cycle by facilitating the release of newly formed virions from infected host cells. This is achieved through their enzymatic activity, which cleaves sialic acid residues from glycoproteins and glycolipids on the host cell surface and on viral proteins. NA functions as a tetramer composed of four identical subunits. Antibodies targeting neuraminidase can neutralize virus infectivity. Neuraminidases are major targets for antiviral drugs such as oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza).
