Influenza A polymerase basic protein 1 (PB1) is a core component of the influenza virus RNA-dependent RNA polymerase complex, essential for viral genome replication and transcription. PB1 acts as the catalytic subunit, driving both replication and transcription of the viral RNA genome. It interacts with PA and PB2 subunits to form a heterotrimeric enzyme complex. Because RNA-dependent RNA polymerases like those containing PB1 do not exist in mammalian hosts—and due to their strict conservation across diverse influenza strains—PB1 represents a promising target molecule/receptor for broad-spectrum anti-influenza therapeutics aimed at inhibiting viral replication directly at its source enzymatic machinery.
