Influenza A Virus (H1N1) (H1N1)

Target
H1N1
Molecular classification
Virus, RNA Virus, Orthomyxoviridae, Influenzavirus A

Overview

Influenza A virus subtype H1N1 (A/H1N1) is a subtype of the influenza A virus, an RNA virus known for causing acute respiratory infections in humans and animals. Its viral envelope contains hemagglutinin (H1) and neuraminidase (N1) which are critical for viral entry and release. H1N1 has been responsible for several major flu pandemics, most notably the 1918 Spanish flu and the 2009 swine flu pandemic. Transmission occurs via respiratory droplets. Prevention strategies include annual vaccination based on WHO surveillance data. Antiviral medications such as oseltamivir may be used for treatment but resistance can develop.

Mechanism of action

Oseltamivir inhibits neuraminidase, preventing the release of new virions from infected cells. Vaccines induce an antibody response targeting hemagglutinin and neuraminidase.
