Target intelligence / Profile preview
The haemagglutinin (HA) protein is a homotrimeric glycoprotein found on the surface of influenza A viruses. It is essential for viral infectivity, mediating both the initial attachment of the virus to host cells and subsequent membrane fusion required for viral entry. HA is the major surface antigen and a primary target for neutralizing antibodies. Antigenic variation in HA leads to seasonal epidemics and pandemics.
Antibodies against HA neutralize the virus by blocking receptor binding or inhibiting membrane fusion.
