Influenza A Virus Hemagglutinin Protein (H7)

Molecular classification
Glycoprotein, Viral protein, Class I fusion protein
01

Overview

The hemagglutinin (HA) protein is a homotrimeric, class I fusion glycoprotein found on the surface of influenza A viruses, specifically the H7 subtype. It is the most abundant transmembrane protein on the viral envelope and plays a central role in virus infectivity and host specificity. HA binds to sialic acid-containing receptors on host cell surfaces and mediates fusion between viral and cellular membranes—an essential step for viral genome release into the cytoplasm. Antigenic variation occurs frequently, complicating vaccine design. H7 viruses have caused outbreaks in poultry worldwide and sporadic human infections with pandemic potential due to their ability to adapt across species barriers. It is an attractive target for antiviral drugs and broadly protective vaccines.
