The hemagglutinin (HA) protein is a major surface glycoprotein of the Influenza A virus, specifically the H3N2 subtype. It is responsible for binding to host cell receptors via its HA1 subunit and mediating fusion between the viral envelope and host cell membrane (HA2 subunit), enabling viral entry. HA is a trimeric protein and the primary target for neutralizing antibodies, making it the key antigen in influenza vaccines. High variability due to antigenic drift necessitates frequent vaccine updates.
Vaccines induce neutralizing antibodies that block HA-mediated receptor binding and membrane fusion. Monoclonal antibodies can directly neutralize the virus by binding to HA and preventing its function.
