01

Overview

The Influenza A H5 hemagglutinin (HA) protein is a surface glycoprotein essential for the infectivity and host specificity of influenza viruses, particularly those of the H5 subtype. It mediates viral attachment to host cells via sialic acid binding and triggers membrane fusion, enabling viral entry. It is a major target for neutralizing antibodies, but is subject to antigenic drift, which poses challenges for vaccine development. The amino acid sequence at the HA1/HA2 cleavage site influences pathogenicity.
