Influenza A Virus M2 Protein (M2)

Target
M2
Molecular classification
Viroporin, Ion channel
01

Overview

The M2 protein of the influenza A virus is a small, integral membrane protein that functions as a proton-selective ion channel (viroporin) in the viral envelope. It is essential for multiple stages of the viral life cycle, including entry, uncoating, assembly, and budding. The primary role of M2 is to act as a pH-gated proton channel, facilitating proton influx into the virion to promote uncoating and prevent premature hemagglutinin activation. Its ion channel activity makes it a target for antiviral drugs such as amantadine and rimantadine.
