Influenza A Virus Matrix Protein 1 (M1)

Target
M1
Molecular classification
Structural protein, Matrix protein
01

Overview

The Influenza A virus M1 protein is the most abundant structural protein in influenza virions. It forms a matrix layer directly beneath the viral lipid envelope, playing a central role in maintaining virion integrity and mediating multiple steps of the viral life cycle. It is essential for assembly at the plasma membrane; its oligomerization drives budding and formation of new virus particles. M1 shuttles between nucleus and cytoplasm during infection and represents an attractive target for antiviral strategies against influenza viruses.
