Influenza A virus neuraminidase N1 subtype (N1 neuraminidase)

Target
N1 neuraminidase
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Viral enzyme, Glycosidase, Sialidase
01

Overview

Influenza A virus neuraminidase N1 subtype is a viral surface glycoprotein enzyme found on the envelope of influenza A virions. It is a homotetrameric type II membrane protein that cleaves terminal sialic acid residues from glycoproteins and glycolipids on the host cell surface and within respiratory mucus, facilitating virus release and spread following replication. The enzyme's substrate specificity and conserved active site make it a validated target for antiviral drugs, several of which are licensed for influenza treatment. Resistance can arise from mutations in the neuraminidase gene, necessitating ongoing surveillance and novel therapeutic strategies.

Mechanism of action

Inhibition of neuraminidase catalytic activity by competitive binding to its active site, prevents cleavage of sialic acid and release of new virions from infected cells
