Influenza B virus hemagglutinin (HA)

Target
HA
Molecular classification
Viral protein, Glycoprotein, Fusion protein, Surface antigen
01

Overview

Influenza B virus hemagglutinin is an essential trimeric surface glycoprotein responsible for both binding host cell receptors via its globular head domain and mediating pH-dependent membrane fusion through its stem region. While structurally similar to its counterpart in Influenza A viruses, it exhibits unique features influencing species specificity and displays reduced capacity for antigenic variation due to lower mutational tolerance—factors relevant both biologically and clinically as targets for immunity-based interventions such as vaccines.
