Influenza neuraminidase (NA) is a surface glycoprotein enzyme found on the influenza virus. It plays a critical role in the viral life cycle, particularly in the release and spread of progeny viruses from infected host cells. NA is an exosialidase (EC 3.2.1.18) that cleaves terminal sialic acid residues from glycan structures on both host cell surfaces and viral proteins, facilitating efficient viral dissemination. It is a major target for anti-influenza drugs.
Neuraminidase inhibitors bind to the active site of neuraminidase, preventing the cleavage of sialic acid and thus inhibiting the release of new virions from infected cells.
