Influenza virus haemagglutinin (HA) is a major surface glycoprotein found on the envelope of influenza viruses. It is essential for viral infectivity, mediating both the initial attachment of the virus to host cells and subsequent fusion of viral and cellular membranes. HA is a homotrimeric protein consisting of three identical subunits that assemble into an elongated, spike-like structure protruding from the viral surface. It is the primary target for neutralizing antibodies generated by infection or vaccination. Antibodies can block either receptor binding or membrane fusion, thus HA remains a principal target for vaccines and antiviral strategies.
