Hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) are two major surface glycoproteins of the influenza virus, playing essential roles in viral infectivity, transmission, and immune recognition. Hemagglutinin mediates viral entry by binding to sialic acid receptors and facilitating membrane fusion. Neuraminidase facilitates viral release by cleaving sialic acid residues. Both proteins are major targets for antiviral drugs and vaccines.
Neuraminidase inhibitors block the activity of neuraminidase, preventing the release of new virions from infected cells.
