Influenza Virus Hemagglutinin Protein (HA)

Target
HA
Molecular classification
Viral Surface Glycoprotein
01

Overview

Influenza virus hemagglutinin (HA) is a major surface glycoprotein found on the envelope of influenza viruses. It is essential for viral infectivity, mediating both the initial attachment of the virus to host cells and subsequent fusion of viral and cellular membranes. HA is a homotrimeric protein, with each monomer cleaved into HA1 and HA2 subunits. It functions in receptor binding to sialic acid on host cells and mediates membrane fusion after endocytosis. Antigenic variation in HA underlies seasonal epidemics and pandemics. HA is a key target for neutralizing antibodies and vaccine design.
