The hemagglutinin (HA) protein of the influenza virus, specifically the H1N1 subtype, is a surface glycoprotein critical for viral infectivity and host specificity. It is a homotrimeric protein, with each monomer cleaved into HA1 (receptor binding) and HA2 (membrane fusion) subunits. HA binds to sialic acid receptors on host cells, initiating viral entry. Its antigenic sites are major targets for neutralizing antibodies, but mutations in these sites (antigenic drift) necessitate frequent vaccine updates. H1N1 has caused several pandemics, highlighting its significance in human health.
