Overview

The hemagglutinin (HA) protein is a major surface glycoprotein of the influenza A virus, including the H1N1 subtype. It plays a central role in viral infectivity and host immune recognition. HA is responsible for binding the virus to sialic acid-containing receptors on host cells and mediating fusion between the viral envelope and host cell membrane, enabling entry of the viral genome into the cytoplasm. It is a key target for neutralizing antibodies and influenza vaccines.
