Overview

“Influenza virus proteins" is a non-canonical, overly broad designation that refers to the many distinct proteins encoded by the influenza viruses, which belong to the family Orthomyxoviridae. The major influenza virus proteins of clinical and research importance include hemagglutinin (HA), neuraminidase (NA), nucleoprotein (NP), matrix proteins (M1, M2), the three subunits of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (PB1, PB2, PA), and non-structural proteins (NS1, NS2/NEP)[3][5][6][7]. The HA and NA proteins are the principal antigenic determinants and are targets of both neutralizing antibodies and antiviral drugs[5][7][10]. Drugs such as oseltamivir target NA, while amantadine targets the M2 ion channel. Because “Influenza virus proteins" is generic and does not indicate a single molecule but rather a collection of viral proteins with distinct structures and functions, it is not correct to treat it as a single therapeutic target. For detailed analysis, each individual viral protein (such as "Influenza A virus hemagglutinin" or "Influenza A virus neuraminidase") should be treated as a unique target[5][7][10].
