Influenza virus antigens are molecular structures on the surface or within influenza viruses that are recognized by the host immune system. The most significant antigens for immune recognition and vaccine development are hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA), both of which are glycoproteins embedded in the viral envelope. These antigens play critical roles in viral infectivity, host specificity, and immune evasion. Antigenic drift and shift lead to the emergence of new strains, necessitating regular updates to vaccines. Other antigens include matrix protein 2 (M2) and nucleoprotein (NP).
Neuraminidase inhibitors block virion release. M2 inhibitors (adamantanes) inhibit ion channel function (although resistance is widespread). Baloxavir inhibits cap-dependent endonuclease.
