Overview

Infusion-related reactions are not a molecular or cellular therapeutic target but rather a clinical syndrome describing unexpected, often adverse responses that occur during or shortly after intravenous administration of medications. These reactions may be immune-mediated—such as IgE-driven type I hypersensitivity leading to anaphylaxis—or nonimmune-mediated, such as cytokine release syndrome. Symptoms range from mild (flushing, itching) to severe and life-threatening events like hypotension and airway compromise. They are most commonly associated with certain chemotherapies (taxanes, platinum agents), monoclonal antibodies (rituximab), and antibiotics like vancomycin. Management includes immediate cessation of the infusion for severe symptoms and supportive care; premedication protocols may reduce risk in high-risk drugs. The term "infusion-related reaction" refers to a clinical phenomenon rather than any specific molecule or receptor.
