INHBE encodes the inhibin beta E subunit, a member of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily. It is involved in regulating diverse physiological processes such as cell proliferation, apoptosis, immune response, hormone secretion, and reproductive physiology. INHBE forms activins and inhibins that affect FSH secretion and may have tissue-specific roles in endometrial maturation and cancer.
Inhibins compete with activin for receptor binding or interact with inhibin-specific receptors, antagonizing activin signaling and FSH release.
