Overview

Inhibition of mitosis refers to the process or mechanism by which cell division, specifically the mitotic (M) phase of the cell cycle, is blocked or disrupted. This is typically achieved by interfering with key molecular machinery required for chromosome segregation and cell division, most notably microtubule dynamics. The primary biological consequence is arresting cells in mitosis, preventing proliferation—a strategy particularly effective against rapidly dividing cancer cells. Newer strategies may also involve targeting regulatory kinases (CDKs), checkpoint proteins, or other components involved in progression through M phase or its regulation.
