Overview

Inhibition of plaque refers to a therapeutic objective or experimental endpoint across multiple biomedical fields rather than a specific molecular target or receptor. In neurodegenerative research, particularly concerning Alzheimer's disease, it denotes the prevention or removal of amyloid-beta (Aβ) aggregates from brain tissue [14, 17]. In the context of cardiovascular disease, it describes the stabilization or regression of atherosclerotic lesions to prevent plaque rupture and subsequent arterial occlusion [4, 5, 13]. Furthermore, in virology and microbiology, 'inhibition of plaque' is a quantitative measure used in assays to determine the efficacy of antiviral drugs or antiseptic agents in preventing viral-induced cell lysis or bacterial biofilm formation [11, 16, 19]. Because the term describes a macroscopic pathological manifestation or an assay result, it is not a standalone biological molecule like an enzyme or transporter [1, 15]. Consequently, it is an incorrect designation for a drug target, representing a clinical or phenotypic outcome rather than a specific protein interaction site [3, 10].
