IKK
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Serine/threonine kinase, Multi-subunit enzyme complex
01

Overview

IκB kinase (IKK) is a multi-subunit enzyme complex that plays a central role in the regulation of inflammation and immune responses. It is best known for its function in activating the nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) pathway, which controls the transcription of genes involved in immunity, cell survival, and inflammation. The IKK complex consists of three core subunits: IKKα, IKKβ, and NEMO. Its primary role is to phosphorylate IκBs, leading to their degradation and subsequent NF-κB activation. Dysregulation can result in impaired immune responses or contribute to chronic inflammatory diseases. IKK is considered a promising drug target for treating cancer, autoimmune diseases, and chronic inflammation disorders.
