Inhibitor of Apoptosis Protein cIAP2 (cIAP2)

Target
cIAP2
Molecular classification
Inhibitor of Apoptosis Proteins (IAPs), E3 ubiquitin ligase
01

Overview

cIAP2 (cellular inhibitor of apoptosis protein 2), also known as HIAP1 or BIRC3, is a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis protein (IAP) family. It functions as a potent suppressor of apoptotic cell death and plays critical roles in regulating immune responses, inflammation, and cell survival. It directly inhibits pro-apoptotic caspases such as caspase-3 to prevent apoptosis and regulates cell survival by targeting pro-apoptotic proteins for ubiquitin-mediated degradation via its E3 ligase activity. cIAP2 expression is highly inducible by NFκB following various triggers such as cytokines or pathogen-associated molecular patterns. Because cIAPs regulate key checkpoints between life/death decisions in cells—especially under stress or inflammatory conditions—they are considered potential therapeutic targets in cancer, autoimmunity/inflammation and infectious diseases.
