Overview

Innate and adaptive immune pathways represent the integrated biological systems responsible for host defense against pathogens and malignant cells. The innate immune system provides an immediate, non-specific response through physical barriers, phagocytic cells, and pattern recognition receptors that identify conserved microbial motifs (StatPearls, 2023). In contrast, the adaptive immune system generates highly specific responses and long-term immunological memory through the activation of T and B lymphocytes (NIH, 2022). Dysregulation of these pathways is central to the development of autoimmune diseases, chronic inflammatory conditions, and the ability of tumors to evade immunosurveillance. Therapeutic strategies targeting these pathways are diverse, encompassing broad-spectrum immunosuppressants, targeted monoclonal antibodies against cytokines, and immune checkpoint inhibitors that re-activate anti-tumor immunity (PubMed, 2021). Because this term describes a broad set of physiological processes and hundreds of potential molecular targets rather than a single protein or receptor, it is categorized as a pathway system rather than a discrete therapeutic target.
