Overview

Following uptake, antigens are processed and loaded onto Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) molecules for presentation to T-lymphocytes, a critical step for initiating adaptive immunity [Roche & Furuta, 2015]. This pathway is a primary focus for vaccine development, where adjuvants are used to target PRRs to enhance the efficiency of antigen presentation and the subsequent memory response [Koff et al., 2013]. Therapeutic modulation of this system is also explored in cancer immunotherapy to overcome tumor-induced immunosuppression by promoting robust dendritic cell activation [Brubaker et al., 2015]. Because it involves a complex cascade of signaling molecules and cellular interactions, it is not a single molecular entity but rather a coordinated biological pathway [Janeway & Medzhitov, 2002].
