Overview

Innate immune cell activation describes the process by which innate immune cells—including macrophages, neutrophils, dendritic cells, natural killer cells, and others—become activated upon recognition of pathogens or tissue damage[1][4][6]. This occurs primarily via pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) that detect pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) or damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs)[1][4]. Upon activation, innate immune cells initiate rapid immune responses by producing cytokines, chemokines, and inflammatory mediators to recruit and coordinate other immune cells, phagocytose pathogens, and trigger inflammation and tissue repair. This process is essential for acute infection control, shaping adaptive immunity, and is implicated in numerous disease states characterized by inflammation or immune dysregulation[1][2][4][6].
