The activation of the innate immune response is a rapid, non-specific defense mechanism that serves as the body's first line of protection against pathogens and injury. It is triggered by the recognition of conserved molecular patterns found on microbes or damaged cells, using germline-encoded pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) present on or within innate immune cells. This system acts within minutes to hours after encountering a threat and does not require prior exposure to the pathogen. Key mechanisms include PRR activation, cytokine production, complement system activation, and metabolic reprogramming. Major cell types involved are macrophages, dendritic cells, neutrophils, natural killer cells, eosinophils, and basophils. Activation leads to pathogen elimination, inflammation, and leukocyte recruitment. While essential, uncontrolled activation can cause tissue damage, necessitating regulatory mechanisms.
