Overview

MF59 is a squalene-based oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant that enhances immunogenicity and efficacy in vaccines. It activates the innate immune system by inducing local production of chemokines and proinflammatory cytokines, recruiting immune cells to the injection site, promoting dendritic cell maturation, and enhancing antigen uptake and presentation. This leads to robust adaptive immune responses, including increased antibody production and T cell activation. MF59 does not target a single receptor but rather activates multiple coordinated mechanisms within the innate immune system.

Mechanism of action

Induction of local chemokines/cytokines leading to recruitment and activation of innate immune cells (monocytes, granulocytes, dendritic cells), enhanced antigen uptake/presentation, and subsequent adaptive immune response.
