Overview

Inner pillar cells are elongated, highly specialized supporting epithelial cells located within the organ of Corti in the cochlea. Together with outer pillar cells, they form the tunnel of Corti, which is critical for the structural organization and function of the auditory sensory epithelium. Inner pillar cells assist in the alignment and separation of inner and outer hair cells, act as key organizers during cochlear development, and may serve as progenitor-like cells with some capacity for transdifferentiation into hair cells under certain experimental conditions. They are defined by a unique cytoskeletal structure (including abundant microtubules), express various ion channels, and interact with adjacent supporting and sensory cells to help preserve the electrochemical environment essential for hearing. Inner pillar cells are not currently considered direct pharmacological therapeutic targets but are of interest in regenerative auditory research due to their reprogramming potential.
